Strength Training and Body Composition. What are My Fitness Equipment Options?

Background on Strength Training

Just about anyone who has watched a news program or picked up a magazine in the checkout isle of the supermarket has seen or heard about the benefits of cardiovascular exercise on body composition and overall health.  What you seldom hear is the benefits of strength training.  Most people hear strength training and images of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barry Bonds, and professional athletes with big muscles come to mind.  What people don’t realize is that strength training done correctly with the correct fitness equipment can be of more benefit to your health and appearance than any amount of cardiovascular training.  I am not saying that you have to eliminate cardiovascular training all together, but if you have to do just one, the benefits from strength training are very substantial.  You also do not need big and complicated gym equipment.  You can use an adjustable bench and either traditional dumbbells or some of the new selectorized dumbbells on the market.  You can also use stretch tubing, kettle bells, or utilize suspension training with your own body weight with fitness equipment like the TRX Suspension Training System.

Benefits of Strength Training

  • Maintains and improves bone density
  • Helps in preventing injuries from common every day activities
  • Elevates your resting metabolism (that’s the amount of calories that your body burns at rest) for up to 16 hours after you are done working out.

To summarize, strength training can be just as, if not more, beneficial to your overall health and appearance as cardiovascular training.  Large, complicated, and expensive gym equipment is not necessary to strength train, as well as, not needing a large amount of space.
